Norilsk approves plan to keep its Botswana subsidiary operational

The Steering Committee of Russian mining major MMC Norilsk Nickel (Norilsk) recently approved the action plan of its Botswana subsidiary, Tati Nickel Mining Company (Tati Nickel). Norilsk owns 85% of Tati Nickel, the other 15% belonging to the government of Botswana. The action plan is intended to improve the Southern African operation’s performance at the current nickel price levels. Tati Nickel also produces copper, palladium and platinum as by-products.

Russia’s Norilsk sees room for palladium output growth

Global palladium producers need to increase output by 2020 to cover a rising deficit, according to an executive at Russia’s Norilsk Nickel, the world’s largest producer of the metal.

Production of palladium, used in catalytic converters, devices which control car exhaust emissions, and in jewellery, currently lags consumption by 30 tonnes, or by 1 million troy ounces.

Indonesia Eases Regulation on Lead Content for Tin Shipments

The limit for lead was increased to a maximum 0.030 percent from 0.010 percent, according to a regulation signed by Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan on June 28 and published on the ministry’s website. The iron limit was unchanged at a maximum 0.005 percent, while other metals such as cadmium and aluminum were removed from the regulation, it said. Tin purity was increased to 99.9 percent from 99.85 percent as planned, the decree stated. The new rules took effect on July 1.

Norilsk launches US$500 million Murmansk environmental project

OJSC MMC Norilsk Nickel has launched a project to help mitigate the environmental impact of nickel production in the Murmansk region of north-west Russia.

The RUB 1.5 billion (US$500 million) project will focus on reducing the negative effects of disposing nickel-refining acidic effluents at Norilsk’s Kola MMC division in Monchegorsk.

Fitch Affirms Vale S.A.’s Credit Ratings at ‘BBB+’

Fitch has also affirmed the ‘BBB+’ FC IDRs of Vale Overseas Limited and Vale Canada Limited, as well as the ‘BBB+’ foreign currency ratings of the senior unsecured debt issued by these companies. The ratings of Vale Canada Limited and Vale Overseas Limited have been linked to those of Vale S.A. through Fitch’s ‘Parent Subsidiary Rating Linkage’ criteria. Vale Overseas Limited, whose debt is guaranteed by Vale S.A., is domiciled in the Cayman Islands. Vale Canada Limited is an operating company with operations in Canada and Indonesia. Its debt is not guaranteed by Vale S.A.

Vale says obtained license to build Serra Sul mine in Brazil

(Reuters) – Vale SA, the world’s largest iron ore miner, received a license from Brazil’s Environmental Protection Agency for its $19.5 billion Serra Sul mine, CEO Murilo Ferreira said on Wednesday, adding that operations should begin in 2016.

Russia’s Norilsk Nickel signs $2.1 bln loan

(Reuters) – Russia’s Norilsk Nickel , the world’s largest nickel and palladium producer, said on Friday it had signed a five-year syndicated loan deal for $2.1 billion.
