Decision expected today on N.W.T. rare earths mine

The Mackenzie Valley Review Board will release its environmental assessment report today on Avalon Rare Metals’ Nechalacho project, located about 100 kilometres east of Yellowknife.

The company says it’s one of the largest undeveloped deposits of rare earth elements in the world.

Glencore Xstrata completes merger of Mutanda and Kansuki copper-cobalt ops

Glencore Xstrata has completed the merger of the Mutanda and Kansuki copper-cobalt mining operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The Baar-based producer and trader completed the merger by way of absorbing the pre-production Kansuki concession into Mutanda Mining, creating an enlarged asset that Glencore Xstrata expects will produce 200,000 tpy of copper cathode and 23,000 tpy of cobalt hydroxide once Kansuki is operational.

DRDO plans nano materials research and production units

Chennai: Realising the potential of nanotechnology in modern warfare, state-owned Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was planning to set up nano materials research and production facilities in three places at a cost of Rs 1,000 crore, a senior official said today.

“The nano materials research and production facilities would come up in Hyderabad, Delhi and Kanpur at a total cost of Rs 1,000 crore in a few years.It is yet to receive the government approval,” DRDO’s chief controller (R&D) S Sundaresh told reporters in Chennai.

Business holds up for Minmetals arm

China’s first-half slowdown didn’t really dent base metal demand, MMG Ltd, the offshore arm of China Minmetals Corp, said on Monday.

MMG, which owns mines in countries including Laos, Republic of the Congo and Australia, said copper output rose 33 percent year-on-year in the first half to 89,235 tons. Output in the second quarter was 10 percent higher than in the first.

Antam Signs Deal With Australia’s Direct Nickel

Antam, a state-owned mining and metal company, has signed an agreement with Australian miner Direct Nickel that could lead to the development of Indonesia’s first nickel laterite processing plant, the companies announced on Monday.

The deal follows a pilot project that involved testing a 200-ton nickel laterite sample provided by Antam to a Direct Nickel (DNi) test plant in Perth.
