Indonesia excels in patents from local scientists

[JAKARTA] Developing nations’ patent applications are dominated by foreign applicants seeking protection for their innovations. Only Indonesia and China have more of their own citizens than foreigners applying for patents locally, according to the Derwent World Patent Index 2013 released in September.

Indonesia’s scientists, most of them from universities and government research institutions, contributed to nearly 55 per cent of the country’s total patents in 2012 while in China over 75 per cent are domestic applicants.

R&D allows China to master superplastic forming technology

Chinese aviation technology research institute began developing its own superplastic forming technology — which can stretch metals greatly and form hard workpieces in one operation — since the 1980s. The institute has been using the technology to reduce the weight of missiles since 2007, according to Chinese aviation news website CAN Press.

The technology was first developed by US company Rockwell Automation in the early 1970s. It caught the attention of AVIC Beijing Aeronautical Manufacturing Technology Research Institute in the 1980s, with the institute setting up a small team to develop its own superplastic forming technology.
