BHP Billiton’s split may have lessons for Alcoa

#Alcoa announced on Monday it will break itself in two, separating a faster growing #Plane and #Car parts business from traditional #Alumina and #Aluminum production as shareholders seek higher returns amid a commodity slump.

#BHP used a similar rationale for ring-fencing select operations in #Australia, #SouthernAfrica and #SouthAmerica into what became South 32 last May to concentrate on its most profitable commodities.

Concerns in New Caledonia over nickel price

There is concern in New Caledonia over the slump in nickel prices and the sharp drop of the share value of Glencore, which is a key stakeholder in the Koniambo nickel plant.

Glencore has lost about 15 billion US dollars in recent weeks and it is uncertain if it will fund major repairs of a furnace at Koniambo.

In North America, the most recognisable brand for EVs had been technology pioneer #Tesla, which aimed to introduce a vehicle with a banner price of less than $30 000. #Chevrolet had followed suit, developing a new #Volt model that it also sought to sell at under $30 000.

In tandem, the number of major companies involved in #Batteries and #EVs had been growing. #Google, #Apple, #Sony, as well as other significant vehicle manufacturers, such as #Audi and #Mercedes, had entered the space in earnest.

“And these guys are bringing in money and intelligent people. The hottest jobs in #SiliconValley [in #California] right now aren’t those at #Facebook or trying to get more clicks on a website. Today, it’s about getting a job in the energy-storage space,” Moores said.

Those pellets can be recycled to be reused again.

WindsorEssex Economic Development Corporation ‘actively engaged’ on GE opportunity

General Electric says it will establish a facility in Canada to produce large, gas-powered engines, which until now were being built at a plant in Wisconsin.

A plan for General Electric to move production of large, gas-powered engines to Canada has caught the eye of officials in Windsor who hope to see that business come to the border city.

#RakeshNaidu, the interim #CEO of the #WindsorEssex Economic Development Corporation, said Monday that the opportunity was on his organization’s radar ahead of the public announcement from #GE.

Glencore’s Glasenberg, once the hunter, now the hunted

It must be tempting for #RioTinto Chief Executive #SamWalsh to contemplate whether he should buy #Glencore, almost a year after fending off an unwelcome approach from his now beleaguered rival.

When Glencore boss #IvanGlasenberg mooted a deal with Rio Tinto in July last year, the shares were trading around 344 pence ($5.19), while those of Rio Tinto were around 3,244 pence.
