Strati Is Soon to Be the World’s First 3-D Printed Electric Vehicle

In what will be a world’s first, Local Motors, Cincinnati Inc., and the U.S. Energy Department’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory are teaming to produce a 3-D printed electric vehicle in September at the International Manufacturing Technology Show in Chicago.

While it’s well known that 3-D printing is making increased inroads into automotive applications, this project takes the disruptive technology to an entirely different level. It pioneers the use of large-scale 3-D printing technology to print a substantial part of a full-size, functional EV.

Inalum begins $1.9 billion expansion with new power plant

State-owned aluminium maker PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum) will spend around US$750 million on a steam-fueled power plant, which would double its production capacity, starting from mid-next year in anticipation of higher energy demand.

Inalum president director Winardi Sunoto said Friday that the firm expected to cover 35 percent of the 600-megawatt power plant project from internal cash. It was now seeking to generate the rest from external sources.

“The construction of the power plant will take up to 40 months, which is very long compared to a smelter or seaport, so it is the priority,” he told reporters after a meeting with Industry Minister MS Hidayat.

The new power plant project is part of $1.9 billion that Inalum will spend on a wide array of development projects over the next few years, including a new aluminium smelter and seaport.

GE-Alstom Deal: French Fear Losing Control of Nuclear Assets

The standoff in France over General Electric’s $17 billion deal with Alstom SA  isn’t just about jobs. It is also about nukes.

Nuclear-technology exports are a robust business in France, and Alstom is a significant player, supplying its Arabelle turbines to projects by engineering firm Areva SA and utility Électricité de France SA  .

The concern among French officials is that future projects could become subject to a veto by Washington if GE owns Alstom’s energy assets.

Congo mines no longer in grip of warlords and militias, says report

Good news from Congo. And perhaps even more unexpectedly, it has come about with the help of users of mobile phones, legislators in Washington and corporate giants such as Apple and Intel. That is the finding of an investigation by the Enough Project, an anti-genocide campaign group, which says Congolese warlords have lost their grip on most of the country’s mines and lucrative conflict minerals.
