Norilsk Nickel accepts full responsibility for leak

The City of Pori has organised a press conference to enable experts and spokespersons at Norilsk Nickel to dispel rumours surrounding the recent leak of 66 tonnes of nickel into the river Kokemäenjoki in Satakunta.

City officials on Monday emphasised that there is no need to issue a no-swimming advisory and that the water can be used to water plants, with recent measurements indicating that nickel concentrations in the river have decreased since the accident.

Nano tech set to beat corrosion of pipelines in Oman

Muscat: Researchers at the Caledonian College of Engineering (CCE) are studying the possibility of using nanotechnology to fight corrosion of oil pipelines, which costs millions of dollars to the industry.

According to a statement issue by the college, a research team led by Elansezhian, R. V. Murali and Muhammad Mumtaz Mirza will develop new coating patterns based on nanotechnology that can be applied on the oil pipelines to combat corrosion. “The researchers are developing an electroless Nickel-Phosphorous coating with nano additives. The new coating will make an amorphous layer and it can prevent corrosion,” the statement added.

Is Vale Falling Behind Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton?

There has already been much said about how the big three iron ore producers – Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton and Vale — flooded the market with cheap production and pressured prices. However, there is an important difference between these companies. Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton have already accomplished most of their current projects, but Vale’s major iron ore project is still in the development stage. Meanwhile, Rio Tinto and, possibly, BHP Billiton are preparing for the next round of expansions.

Colombia coal, nickel contractor says talks with strikers imminent

CARACAS, July 11 (Reuters) – Contractor Dimantec, which employees around 3,500 mechanics to service machinery at Colombia’s largest coal mines, said it is planning to meet with union representatives in a bid to end an unlimited strike that entered a third day on Friday.

If the stoppage drags on, it could disrupt mines in Colombia, the world’s fourth-biggest coal exporter, whose biggest operators include joint venture Cerrejon and U.S.-based Drummond. It also affects Colombia’s Cerro Matoso nickel mine, one of the world’s largest.

Indonesia Ore Ban to Remain Should Joko Win Poll, ANZ Says

Indonesia’s ban on ore exports will probably remain in place and speculation that the curb may be relaxed if Joko Widodo becomes the country’s next president is misplaced, said Australia & New Zealand Banking Group.

Nickel fell as much as 2 percent in London on Wednesday as unofficial counts showed the Jakarta governor won the most votes in the world’s third-biggest democracy, putting him ahead of Suharto-era general Prabowo Subianto. While the market perceives Joko’s market-friendly policies as an indication that the ban will be lifted or at least watered down, that’s unlikely, analysts including Mark Pervan wrote in a note.

Aluminum Touches 13-Month High on Alcoa Deficit Outlook

Nickel fell for the third time in fours days after unofficial counts showed Joko Widodo leading Indonesia’s presidential race, fueling speculation that the nation may ease its export ban on unprocessed ores.

Widodo has 53.3 percent of support with 99.4 percent of votes counted, according to Lingkaran Survei Indonesia. A tally by Saiful Mujani Research & Consulting had him at 52.9 percent. Widodo was seen as more “market-friendly,” and his election could mean better relationships for mining companies, said Garrett Nelson, an analyst at BB&T Capital Markets. Indonesia is the biggest producer of mined nickel.
