(Phys.org) —Researchers at the US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory have created a small scale “hydrogen generator” that uses light and a two-dimensional graphene platform to boost production of the hard-to-make element.

Single Chinese company owns 60% of world market for tantalum

China’s development of the corrosion-resistant metal tantalum commonly used in electronics has developed rapidly in recent years, owing to local manufacturers’ commitment to research and development efforts, the China Science Daily reports, with one factory having become particularly successful.

While over 40 Chinese manufacturers are currently in the business of chemical materials and knowhow for tantalum’s applications in electronic devices such as mobile phones, a factory in northern China accounts for about 60% of the global tantalum market, the report said.

Cosco-Vale deal to end giant ore carrier ban

Beijing’s ban on Vale’s giant ore carriers has been practically lifted after China Cosco Holdings’ landmark deal with the Brazilian miner last Friday over a 25-year freight contract that involves 14 of the massive ships known as Valemax vessels, a person familiar with the matter said.

Nickel Price Influenced by Export Bans of Indonesia and the Philippines

It is possible that the nickel price will increase further in the next two and a half years but not certain as Indonesia’s export ban is old news by now. Furthermore there has emerged speculation that Chinese traders in Indonesia bypass the government’s export ban by labelling nickel ore as iron ore in order to continue nickel exports (causing a larger global nickel).

After implementation of Indonesia’s mineral ore exports ban, the Philippines has emerged as the main supplier of nickel ore to China’s massive nickel pig iron (NPI) sector.

Tin Smelters in Indonesia Holding out for Premiums to LME

Tin producers in Indonesia, the largest exporter, are holding out for sales of the metal above the benchmark spot rate in London to try to counter a decline in prices to the lowest level in more than a year.
