French engineering company Alstom is considering a $16.9bn (£10bn) offer from US firm General Electric (GE) for its energy business.

This deal is far more accretive to GE than Siemans ( SI , quote ).  GE has been stalking Alstom for years.  Jeff Immelt was intense in his pursuit back in 2009.  Siemens only playing defense in their bid as they compete in Europe with GE daily on power.

PARIS (Reuters) – France said it would defend jobs and its national interest as it met suitors eyeing a breakup of engineering group Alstom on Monday and suggested it preferred Germany’s Siemens over U.S. giant General Electric.

President Francois Hollande held talks with GE boss Jeff Immelt on Monday morning and sat down later with Siemens CEO Joe Kaeser to discuss the fate of Alstom, the maker of the country’s prestigious TGV high-speed trains and turbines for power plants.

Singapore. Puma Energy, a global oil company, said it was looking to boost its business in Indonesia, capitalizing on the country’s accelerating economic growth.

The oil company said it aimed to build new oil terminals in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan. The plan is rolled out on top of the company’s recent acquisition of Medco Sarana Kalibaru (MSK), the fuel storage and distribution unit of Medco Energy Internasional — Indonesia’s largest listed oil and gas company.

One of iron ore miner Vale’s big talking points is that economically developed South Korea uses around twice as much steel per GDP as China. However, India uses vastly less than even China. What Vale’s data points out is that China’s steel demand growth, which is exciting in its own right, has much less room to run than India’s. And the obvious demand for metallurgical coal mines in India shows just how notable an opportunity supplying the Indian steel industry is.

The World Bank Group’s Board of Executive Directors today approved a US$100 million grant to the Republic of Burundi for the Jiji and Mulembwe hydropower project.

In Burundi, only four percent of the ten million-large population currently has access to electricity, marking some of the lowest access rates anywhere in the world.

The development objective of the Jiji-Mulembwe hydropower project is to increase the supply of clean and low-cost hydropower electricity to Burundi’s national grid.  The project will almost double the installed generation capacity in Burundi.

ConocoPhillips will restart its mothballed liquefied natural gas plant near Kenai, Alaska, and will resume LNG shipment in May, a company spokeswoman said Monday.

The company will make six shipments this year, spokeswoman Amy Burnett said. The decision follows a Monday announcement that the US Department of Energy has given final approval to ConocoPhillips’ request to export up to 40 billion cubic feet of natural gas over two years from the LNG plant.
