Four nickel mines shut down temporarily
THE DEPARTMENT of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has temporarily shut down four nickel mines in Santa Cruz, Zambales after finding their operators failing to comply with regulations.
In a letter dated July 15, the DENR — Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Central Luzon Regional Director Danilo U. Uykieng ordered the suspension of the operations of Zambales Diversified Metals Corp., BenguetCorp. Nickel Mines Inc. (BNMI), Eramen Minerals, Inc. (EMI), and LNL Archipelago Minerals Inc.
MGB Director Leo L. Jasareno separately said that the order took effect on July 15, and the miners cannot resume operations until they have met all the requirements.
