R&D allows China to master superplastic forming technology
Chinese aviation technology research institute began developing its own superplastic forming technology — which can stretch metals greatly and form hard workpieces in one operation — since the 1980s. The institute has been using the technology to reduce the weight of missiles since 2007, according to Chinese aviation news website CAN Press.
The technology was first developed by US company Rockwell Automation in the early 1970s. It caught the attention of AVIC Beijing Aeronautical Manufacturing Technology Research Institute in the 1980s, with the institute setting up a small team to develop its own superplastic forming technology.
